It seems that many Connecticut homeowners have at least one room in their house that leaves them in despair. They want to change it, but how? Did you know you can fix most problem living spaces with a simple can of paint? Yes! One can change the entire look and feel of a living space and fool the naked eye with a fresh coat of paint. Believe it or not, it is all done with color. Here are 5 easy and quick fixes that can be achieved through the simple process of painting.

My room is too long, how can I make it look and feel like a normal sized room?

Changing a space can be done by simply tricking the naked eye with color. If this is the case, paint one wall in a warm shade in a neutral or cool room. The warm color on the wall will make the room seem less like a bowling alley and will become an accented feature in the room.

My room seems to be too short, so how can I make the room appear longer?

Again, focus on an accented wall. Paint one wall a cool shade or color. Leave the remaining walls a warm and inviting shade. The cool-colored wall or the accented wall will appear to recede; creating the illusion the room is slimmer, larger and longer.

The ceilings in my home are too high, how can I make them appear lower?

Some homeowners see high ceilings as a nightmare, but others who do not have them find them divine. If the ceilings in your home appear to be too high, paint the ceiling a darker color than the walls.  After completing this step if you still feel your ceilings are too high, paint the top 12 inches of the wall in the same color as the ceiling. This will immediately create an intimate feel in your living space.

The ceilings in my home are too low, how can I make them appear higher?

Some Connecticut homeowners find that low ceilings add an intimate feel in a living space, where others find them to be constricting. One trick of the trade in making your ceiling appear higher is to paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls and bring the wall color up on the ceiling about six inches, or paint the baseboards in your home the same color as the wall. This will create the illusion of height in any living space.

A room in my home has no windows, so it feels closed in and dark. How can I open the space and add light?

Without adding a window to your living space, consider painting the walls in a light or pale color. This does not necessarily mean your walls have to be white, but lighter colors reflect light and give the illusion of a larger, brighter, open space.
