Designing the Bathroom

The good news about redesigning your bathroom in Connecticut is that it doesn't take much to make significant improvements.  The bathroom is likely the smallest room in the house, so creating more space is a priority, along with comfort and ease of cleanliness.  You want a warm, pleasant bathroom, and a fresh look can be stunningly rewarding.  It may be a small space, but it may also be the most important.

A fresh coat of paint is likely necessary to rejuvenate walls that may have mildew stains, or that are smudged with cosmetics or fingerprints.  Neutral colors, such as white, give the impression that a space is larger than it actually is.  However, having color on the wall is desirable for many, particularly in a children's bathroom where you might install some fun, splashy tiles.  The best colors for a bathroom are pastels, like a soft blue reminiscent of the ocean.  Keep it solid, because busy stenciling or wallpaper makes the room feel more cluttered.  One piece of art is likely enough.

You might consider covering visible plumbing.  This could mean sliding in a shelved storage unit over your toilet to deter attention from the unsightly tank.  You might want to purchase a small curtain to hang at the underside of the sink, if pipes are in plain view.  Covering metal will warm the space and add charm.

Storage is key in the bathroom.  Get rid of all unused products, old cosmetics, expired medication, etc.  These things accumulate quickly and take up what little space your bathroom has to offer.  A lot of bathrooms have unnecessary towel rods—how many of these do you really need?  Buy a hook for the door for your towel.  Consider a mirrored medicine cabinet for storage, or a small wall piece with shelves.  Bathrooms accumulate magazines that may sit for months.  Regularly de-cluttering and maintaining order in the bathroom is imperative to making it less claustrophobic.

One way to heighten the bathroom is to draw attention to the ceiling or the top of the walls.  A small, tasteful stencil along the top of the walls, like seashells or fish, may do the trick.  If it’s possible, installing a window or skylight will really open up the room, even if the window is above the door letting in light from another room.  Wall sconces will add an elegant touch, and can be bought at discount stores for quite a bargain.  Candles in the bathroom give a romantic glow.  Decorating with a series of small mirrors will make the light dance and reflect, and add a new dimension.

Little changes for a little room can work wonders.  You can give yourself what will feel like a new bathroom without spending a whole lot of money—in as little as one day.
